The Police are like our family members. They are also people and citizens like us. They have an important role in the social and security activities of the country. In the present context of democracy, to stay within the constitution and the prevalent laws and provide security to the people is no less challenging a task. Why that is when the name of the police, who are responsibly fulfilling the duty of protecting lives and properties, is brought up there is fear amongst the common people? In an effort to find the reason for it, this curiosity has become a question in my mind for a long time. This fear factor seen in the people is not something that has just evolved today. This fear factor seen in the
people is not something that has just evolved today. What is the psychological aspect behind this mentality? The development of education, modern training programs, their organizational structure and other related technical activities of police have been taking place according to the demands of time. Likewise, the Nepali people too have changed allot. But I don't see substantial transformation in the relation between the police and the common people, the way they view each other and understand each other and also their feelings and behavior about each other. Even today, it feels like as though there is a wall in between two. The feeling of humanity, the close relationship, the convenience and the harmless sense of security that both sides should be getting from each other have not materialized. The people have not been able to free their minds from the mentally of fear and terror as soon as the name of the police is uttered. I feel that even the police have not been able to free their minds from the concept that the civilians on a whole are like criminals.
Who do the people have to fear the very police who are there to provide security to them from the criminal and anti-social activities committed by irresponsible people and anti-social elements? Why are the works been done by the police that isolate them from those for whom the police organization has been created? It is important to study and analyze the psychological, social and political reasons and get rid of this non-humane thoughts about each other. The present feeling of fear and the situation of staying isolated from the people and being unfriendly will create enmity and conflict between the two; it will instigate a hostile mentality between the two. Thus, to educate this mentality I feel that there is a need for a psychological practical knowledge based on psychological study and research and a relevant terracing approach in training programs by way of which a closeness and goodwill could be maintained between the police and the people.
