Women and Children Service Center in Nepal Police protecting the vulnerable
The entire world is concerned about the safety and security of women and children who constitute the major proportion of human population. In the present context when Nepal is a signatory to United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, it is the major responsibility of Nepal Police to work for the protection of the rights of women and children and to secure them from the fear of crime.
The Women and Children Service Center was established in BS 2052, by appointing and mobilizing female police officers, with an aim to control and prevent crimes against women and children, to investigate and publish the perpetrator of those crimes according to law and to safeguard the rights of the victims. It was also established to provide relief to the victims in a conductive environment. At present there are a total of 25 Women and Children Service Centers that are actively operating with one in the center, one in the Valley Police Office and one each in 23 different districts. The crimes that are investigated by the Women and Children Service Center mainly include sexual offences, human trafficking, child marriage, polygamy, domestic violence and abortion.
These crimes not only provide a conductive environment for victims to lodge complaints but they also look into the state of the victim and provide immediate legal aid, health services, counseling and temporary shelter in coordination with various NGOs. According to the concept of public participation and proactive approach, it has also been organizing awareness campaigns, street plays and programs on television and radio to prevent and control such grave offences depicting child sex abuse and trafficking in human.
