प्रहरी महानिरीक्षक बसन्त बहादुर कुँवर

 

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Basanta Bahadur Kunwar is a distinguished law enforcement professional who joined the police service on 19 March 1995 as a Police Inspector and has dedicated most of his life to serving and protecting the country. He was appointed as the Chief of Nepal Police by the Government of Nepal on 24 March 2023.

 

Throughout his illustrious career spanning over 28 years, his roles have been diverse and dignified where he demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to preventing crime and promoting peace and security in the community. He has commanded different police units under the most challenging circumstances, demonstrating dynamic leadership and outstanding professionalism. As a result, his remarkable performance as the chief of the District Police Office, Chitwan earned him the prestigious Police Baton Award in 2016.

 

He has commanded Police Tactical Training College and Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office in the capacity of SSP and also worked as the Central Spokesperson of Nepal Police. He led the Central Election Cell during the General Election of 2022 and headed the Madhesh Province Police Office before he was promoted to the esteemed rank of AIGP.

 

IGP Kunwar has received extensive training in various areas such as Human Rights, VIP Security, Crime Investigation, and Conflict Management including the most recent Regional Senior Mission Leadership Course in the USA. He holds an MBA degree from Tribhuvan University.

 

His meritorious service extends well beyond Nepal to reach the international community, including UN Missions in Sudan and Liberia. His selfless service and sincere devotion reflect distinct credit upon himself and Nepali Police. He has been decorated with the prestigious “Suprabal Janasewa Shree” and other dignified medals in recognition of his outstanding service.

Born in 1970 to his father Bhim Bahadur Kunwar and mother Nam Kala Kunwar, IGP Kunwar is married to Laxmi Parajuli Kunwar and blessed with two sons. He is a passionate traveller and sports enthusiast, and regardless of his busy schedule, he makes time for exploring new places as well as his fitness routine.
